What does a fire protection consultant do?

A fire protection consultant helps building owners and project teams understand and meet fire and life safety requirements under the Ontario Building Code and Ontario Fire Code. At UNIO, that means code consulting, drawing reviews, fire safety plans, compliance audits, and support through approvals, inspections, and violation notices. It’s engineering guidance you can act on, at any stage of a building’s life.

When should I contact a fire safety consultant?

Earlier than most people do. The best time is before drawings are finalized or a permit is submitted, when code issues are cheapest to fix. But we’re brought in at every stage: during construction when requirements conflict, before an AHJ inspection, or after receiving an order or notice of violation.

Do I need a fire safety plan for my building?

If your building has a fire alarm system, or falls under the occupancies listed in Section 2.8 of the Ontario Fire Code, yes. An approved fire safety plan is a legal requirement, and it must be kept current. If you’re not sure whether your building qualifies, that’s a five-minute conversation with us.

What is included in a fire safety plan?

A site-specific plan covering emergency procedures, staff responsibilities, occupant evacuation, the fire protection systems in the building and how they’re maintained, and drawings the fire department can actually use. We build plans around how the building really operates. The Ontario Fire Code also requires the plan to be reviewed at least every 12 months, which we handle as a standing service.

Can UNIO help with a notice of violation?

Yes, this is one of our core services. We review the order, identify the root cause, and prepare a corrective action plan and the documentation the authority having jurisdiction needs to see, then support you through to compliance. The goal is resolving the violation with minimal disruption to your building’s operation.
