REQUIRED FOR YOUR PROJECT?

Since 2020, IST has been required under Ontario Building Code Section 3.2.10.1 for all new construction with fire protection or life safety systems. The 2015 and 2020 National Building Code updates extended this requirement across Canada.

New Construction
Any new build with interconnected fire protection or life safety systems triggers integrated systems testing under CAN/ULC 1001.

Renovations & Additions
Modifications to an existing life safety system require testing of the affected integrations.

Software & Programming Changes
Material changes to fire alarm or building control programming that can affect system integrations require retesting of the affected integrations.

Recurring Testing
The standard calls for retesting one year after the initial test on new construction, then every five years. Buildings tested through a retrofit follow the five-year cycle.
No Minimum Size
A small office with a fire alarm tied to one magnetic door hold still needs integrated systems testing. There is no exemption based on building size.

Document Review & Integration Matrix

We collect the design documentation from the project’s engineers and contractors and map every interconnection between fire protection and life safety systems into a single integration matrix. This is where conflicts get caught, while changes are still cheap.

Integrated Test Plan

We prepare the test plan the standard requires: cause-and-effect matrix, test scenarios and protocols, notification and personnel safety procedures, and phased-occupancy considerations. Submitted to the AHJ where required.

Pre-Test Confirmations

Before test day, every system must already be individually verified: fire alarm verification to CAN/ULC-S537, contractor and verifier confirmations, ESA approval, elevator acceptance. We chase these down so the test date holds.

The Integrated Test

UNIO leads the test alongside the trades operating their systems, executing each scenario in the plan. Results land in the matrix live, deficiencies are logged in the room, and the AHJ witnesses where required. Final report and close-out documentation follow for occupancy.

What is Integrated Systems Testing?

IST verifies that interconnected fire protection and life safety systems operate together as designed. Systems are verified individually during construction; IST proves the connections between them work as one.

Since 2020, OBC 3.2.10.1 requires IST before occupancy for new construction with interconnected life safety systems, and for renovations that modify existing integrations. The standard calls for retesting at one year, then every five years.

Fire alarm and detection, monitoring connections, sprinklers, fire pumps, smoke control, dampers, door holders and maglocks, elevator recall, emergency power, voice communication, and any system designed to operate with them.

An Integrated Testing Coordinator plans and leads the test, trades operate their systems, and the AHJ witnesses where required. UNIO acts as ITC from test plan through final report.

Individual systems can pass their own tests and still fail together. IST catches integration failures before occupancy, while they’re still the contractor’s problem instead of the owner’s.
